Clinical characteristics of perinatal stroke
Abstract
Objective : Perinatal stroke is a group of heterogenous conditions in which there is focal disruption of cerebral blood flow secondary to arterial or cerebral venous thrombosis or embolization, between 20 weeks of fetal life through to the 28th postnatal day. This study was aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of perinatal stroke. Results : Total thirteen patients were ascertained from the database of patients in Hallym university Hospital. They were all fullterm and 7 patients were male. Only two patients showed low Apgar score with emergency c-sec surgery. Ten patients showed focal seizure within 3 days after birth. Seven patients showed normal motor development, three patients showed mild motor weakness but showed improvement after rehabilitation, three patients showed persistent motor impairment. One patient have been suffered from Lennox-Gastuat syndrome. Conclusion : Ischemic stroke during perinatal period has the potential for life-long morbidity. Focal neonatal seizure within 3 days after birth might the cause of perinatal stroke. Few patients were associated with risk factors during perinatal periods such as emergent C-sec or low apgar score. Poor outcome in perinatal stroke were not associated with these perinatal risk factors.
